Pay Day
For most of my career I was a one-person show surrounded by talented contractors. Hiring my first actual employee taught me something I probably should have figured out sooner.

I love payday. It used to be the day when I would go out and treat myself to an album at A&A Records. There were many years when I didn't get a paycheque in the traditional sense. As a business owner, artist, entrepreneur, and neurodivergent creator, paydays were never a given, consistent, or expected. But for the last year and a half, I have been giving myself a paycheque on the 1st and 15th of every month.
So fun.
Tonight I logged into my bank account and was surprised to see I had more money than I expected. I checked what happened, and there it was: my payday deposit. Huh.
It wasn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. But there it was in its tiny-perfect glory.
And it was two days early. I have no idea why. I set the date, did the thing, approved the stuff, but there it was, two days early. Thanks, er, me?

Add to this, there are two other people I "employ" who also got paid today. That makes me feel good, and I love seeing that money leave the company bank account. It means we're doing cool things together. I also love seeing invoices come in from contractors and suppliers, and I love paying them, usually the same day I get them, because that means we're creating cool shit.
We're pivoting Make More Creative a bit in the next month to focus on new ways to help companies get their story out into the world, and in doing so, I see our team growing again in the very near future.
I spent much of my career as a one-person show, surrounded by talented contractors and partners. It wasn't until I hired my first employee that I realized how much better, more fun, and more productive business could be.
Teamwork does make the dream work.
