Road Rides and Robots

This and other summer adventures are just around the corner.

Last night, I was out with my kids and their significant others to discuss plans for our summer road trip to Vancouver Island for my mom’s birthday, and the start of a new family venture: a drone photogrammetry company called My Robot Sky.

The plan for the ride is relatively straightforward; we’ll ride from Calgary to Kelowna on Day One and stay there. Do a wine tour at Mission Hill, have dinner, then grab some sleep at a hotel. Day Two will see a late and relaxed start to the day with a ride down the Coquihalla before reconnecting with the Trans-Canada Highway around Hope. We’ll artfully dodge Vancouver by hanging a left after Surrey and then make our way to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal for the quick float over to the island.

We’ll be there for four to five days celebrating with my parents before we head back. The route back is up for discussion because Highway 3 and 6 are such pretty bits of road—it would be worth the extra couple of hours or adding a day to ride it.

What would a road trip be without a creative business angle? So not only will we be filming for BIKRTIPS.COM along the way, but while we’re on Vancouver Island, we’ll also be developing connections to start the west coast branch of our new family business, My Robot Sky.

My Robot Sky has been a project bouncing around my brain for the past several years, and it is finally the right time to launch it, thanks to my kids. Kierin has just completed his Drone Pilot (UAV) license, and Keegan will be getting his next. Together we’ll build the brand in Alberta and BC with a focus on providing drone photogrammetry services to help construction companies track progress on large-scale, multi-month, multi-year projects. Did that sound like a sales pitch? It probably did, but just wait to see what we've got up our sleeve.

I don’t want to say much more than that until we do our official launch next month. But just know I’m looking forward to this next adventure and growing a kickass aerial tech business with my kids.
