Aspiring Electricologist

Aspiring Electricologist.

In my quest to wire an on/off switch to my motorcycle's USB charger, I may have found my new favourite store. B & E Electronics in Calgary is to warehouses as Narnia is to wardrobes—a seemingly normal-looking industrial building filled with everything you could ever want to redirect and control electricity.

I am no electricologist, but I got a crash course from my pal John on how to rewire my charger to utilize my spiffy new switch; I now know enough to be dangerous. "Dargie, the first rule for you is to unplug everything from the actual power, so you don't fry yourself," warned John.

The first rule for me? It's like he knows me. It's like he's seen me jump into projects while having zero clue about what I'm doing—I say it's part of my charm; other people say I'm a lunatic.

John drew me some pictures of how the wiring should go along with a stick figure of a biker-looking fellow getting electrocuted beside the battery. He also taught me how to use a voltage-metre…voltometer? Electicometre? See, what could go wrong?

I've got a fancy electronics kit now; I have some heat-shrink, electrical tape, solder, rubber-soled shoes, wire strippers, and several switches just in case I mess up the first attempt. I've also decided to film this adventure and add it to the BIKR TIPS library so other people can learn from my experience.

I'm not sure if this will be a cautionary tale or an educational piece. Time will tell.
